Press Release
FaceTime and Mirapoint Join Forces to Fight Rapidly Growing IM and Email
Messaging Threats
Benefiting from the simplicity and security of an appliance-based approach,
organizations can address security threats from multiple messaging sources
San Jose, Calif. (RSA Conference) - Feb. 14, 2006 - Mirapoint, the secure
messaging experts, and FaceTime Communications, the leading provider of
solutions for securing instant messaging (IM), peer-to-peer (P2P), and spyware,
have entered into a strategic relationship to secure email, instant messaging
(IM) and peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic from the rising tide of malicious security
threats targeted at these communication vehicles.
The use of IM in businesses is growing - whether company-approved or not - and
yet only 11 percent of all corporations have IM security in place, according to
research firm Radicati Group. As a result, hackers, spammers and virus writers
are increasingly looking to IM as a fertile ground for malware since there are
so few IM security deployments.
"Employee use of public IM programs to communicate both within the organization
and outside creates security and regulatory compliance risks," said Robert P.
Mahowald, program director, Collaborative Computing for IDC. "To that end,
companies should look to deploy solutions that protect email, IM and P2P
communications channels against viruses, spam, worms, spyware and hacking."
Market-Leading Collaboration Security Solution
Combining the award-winning email security capabilities of Mirapoint's
RazorGate with FaceTime's certified IMAuditor and RTGuardian appliances, IT
organizations can offer their users new collaboration benefits free from
security threats. Together the products also offer customers the ability to
secure, track, store and archive IM just as they do with email today.
Benefiting from the simplicity and security of an appliance-based approach, IT
administrators can easily deploy a joint Mirapoint/FaceTime solution in the
network and start blocking spam, viruses, worms and spyware regardless of
whether it is coming in via email or IM communications.
"As the tide for IM as a viable business communications vehicle is rapidly
rising, Mirapoint's commitment to creating a secure messaging infrastructure
has now expanded to include IM and its host of security threats and compliance
issues," said Barry Ariko, chief executive officer for Mirapoint. "We are
pleased to partner with FaceTime, an industry leader in the IM security market,
to bring an award-winning, full-featured solution to our current customer base
and prospects."
Ensuring IM Service Continuity, Hygiene and Compliance
The recent winner of SC Magazine's Group Test for IM Security, FaceTime's
IMAuditor allows companies to safely deploy public and enterprise IM within the
corporate network. Because FaceTime is certified by all major public IM
networks and EIM providers, organizations are ensured service continuity, in
addition to the power of TrueCompliance™ benefits offered only by FaceTime.
IMAuditor also scans for spIM and protects against worms and viruses in IM
traffic using advanced behavioral-based and signature-based mechanisms. For
controlling P2P, VoIP and unauthorized IM, FaceTime's RTGuardian perimeter
appliance monitors and secures real-time communications within organizations in
addition to being a gateway anti-spyware solution. Together these two products
meet regulatory compliance requirements for IM according to the strictest
interpretation of the regulations. Both products receive automated updates
provided by FaceTime Security Labs, the threat research arm of FaceTime.
"Business communication is critical to organizations worldwide - voice, email
and now IM have become productivity enhancing applications that ensure a steady
flow of knowledge both within and outside the enterprise," said Kailash
Ambwani, president and chief executive officer of FaceTime Communications.
"Malware writers know this and increasingly use applications such as IM to gain
entry into corporate networks to wreak havoc and steal information. Mirapoint
has been expertly tackling email security threats for more than five years and
we are delighted to work in conjunction with an industry leader and their
innovative technology."
Delivering a Secure Messaging Infrastructure
Recently named one of the top five email security vendors in the market by
Radicati Group, Mirapoint's RazorGate is a complete email security appliance
designed to stop multiple kinds of email-borne attacks. With consistently high
spam and virus catch-rates, Mirapoint's RazorGate email security appliances
offer multi-layered protection at the network edge to block hackers, spam and
virus threats, as well as provide advanced management of message traffic
through policy enforcement tools, content filters and detailed reporting.
"Companies need to lock down or control IM use within their networks -
regardless if the company sanctions IM use or not," said Michael Osterman,
president and founder of Osterman Research. "Companies should look to deploy
solutions similar to those in place for their email infrastructure. Corporate
messaging is expanding beyond email, and security threats are propagating
across email, IM and P2P communications. Securing all channels from viruses,
spam, worms, spyware and hacking is critical for maximum network uptime."
